Someone tell CNN that tornado photo is mis-captioned

Word is getting around about the tornado photo from Iowa that I wrote about on Friday, the one that originally ran on June 10 in the Mason City Globe Gazette web site. It’s getting around to everyone except the “iReport” section of CNN’s web site.

That’s the photo snapped by a local woman who is city clerk of her town — a photo that is not from the deadly “Little Sioux” tornado that killed four Boy Scouts.

A reader who writes for the Meteorology News blog commented on mine over the weekend, noting in some detail how CNN had the photo up as of June 13, posted by Orion5243. Numerous readers have commented on the iReport version of the photo here — many of them pointing out that it is indeed not what it is purported to be by “Orion.”

Meteorology News included a screenshot of the iReport page from Saturday, perhaps anticipating that it would be taken down by CNN. Alas, it was not. So the myth about this photo continues, while readers do a yeoman’s job of trying to debunk it.
