Hoping Chuck Peters influences the NAA crowd

Chuck Peters
I’m attending a couple of days of the Newspaper Association of America conference in Las Vegas, where I’ll be on a panel about social media tomorrow. But today’s thrill, more than the bright desert sky or the neon lights, was the session that included Gazette Company CEO Chuck Peters, who challenged the audience at the top with three questions:
I was midway back in the (relatively sparse) crowd for this general session. Later, I asked him what percentage of the NAA audience responded to his questions.
He said about half had used LinkedIn, about 30 percent had used Facebook and fewer than 15 percent had twittered. He went on to talk about the reorganization his company is undergoing, which he and Steve Buttry have blogged about already.
A summary of Peters’ presentation, and his slides, are on his blog.
I hope the audience of mostly senior executives and ad people gets the message that these social tools aren’t just for kids. Hopefully, our panel tomorrow will help drive that message home.
A couple of other notes:
First, the head of the Detroit newspaper JOA, Dave Hunke, made some news during his presentation about the massive reorganization that’s going to happen on March 30, in which the papers will home deliver only on Thursday, Friday and Sunday; they will be available only online or by single-copy other days.
The news: The company is also partnering up with Plastic Logic to distribute/lease eReaders to the market, on which they will make their content available. Don’t know any details beyond that, other than this: They’ll have 100 to start with by March 30, but expect to have more when the company is can make them more widely available. It’ll be interesting to see what the news product looks like on the reader.
Second, you can follow my tweets from the conference here. And this is the Twitter Search feed from anyone using the #naamxc09 hashtag.
